Certain seafood dishes just aren't the same when served with out Tartar Sauce, but what goes into those mass-produced bottled sauces is anyone's guess. This homemade recipe tastes totally awesome and is super healthy. First start by making the mayonnaise and then turn it into a Tartar Sauce in minutes.
Ingredients
Mayonnaise
- Egg Yolk
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil (300ml)
- Lemon Juice (2 tsp)
- Garlic (1 clove crushed)
Tartar Conversion
- Capers (3 tbsp rinsed and chopped)
- Gherkin (1 finely chopped)
- Shallot (1 small)
- Parsley (3 tbsp chopped)
- Lemon Zest (1 tsp)
- Salt & Pepper (to taste)
Mayonnaise
STEP 1
Separate the egg yolks and place the egg yolks, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt into a large bowl and mix.
STEP 2
Very slowly and gradually add the oil. Repeat until it becomes thick.
STEP 3
Add the crushed garlic then whisk the mixture until it becomes smooth.
STEP 4
Season to taste.
Tip: Homemade mayonnaise is made with raw, unpasteurised egg yolks it will only keep for two days in the fridge .
Tartar Sauce
STEP 1
Mix the mayonnaise with the chopped capers, gherkin or cornichons, shallot, parsley, lemon zest, and salt and pepper. Then serve.
