When it comes to sleep, I consider it to be one of the most important factors of our lives. Not only does sleep aid our body in its recovery from our daily activities, but it also helps protect our mental health, physical health and all in all, leads to a long and healthy, happy life. If you've been struggling to sleep recently and have been feeling the knock-on effect then this Primal Turmeric Sleep Shot may just become your new best friend. I think we all know the value of getting a decent night's sleep, but when we don't, the first thing we shouldn't be doing is running to the local chemist for a dose of sleeping pills. Instead, it's time to go back to basics with the amazing ingredients Mother Nature created for us. This recipe is simple. Fact. It's made with 9 Primal-friendly ingredients, all of which our Primal ancestors would have used themselves. However, the two main stars of this recipe have to be turmeric and ginger - both of which provide our bodies with some pretty wonderful health benefits. Let's start with turmeric. At its base, turmeric helps to reduce inflammation, lower your blood sugar levels, help the liver to detoxify, boosts your immune system, protects your digestive system and may help to reduce the risk of diabetes. All of these benefits can help promote better sleep quality and allows you to wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. When it comes to ginger, it's actually the root of the Zingiber officinale plant and is closely related to turmeric and cardamom. Ginger is well known for its calming effects and helps remove toxins from the body, promotes good gut health, reduces muscle soreness, promotes muscle recovery and contains anti-inflammatory properties. All of which help promote a better night's sleep.

Ingredients

Turmeric shots

  • Grated ginger (1 tbsp)
  • Black pepper (Pinch)
  • Fresh chilli (Pinch)
  • Raw honey (1 tbsp)
  • Coconut water (1 1/2 cups)
  • Juice of lemon
  • Ground turmeric (1 tsp)
  • Grated carrot (60g)
  • Coconut oil (1 tsp)

Method

In a blender, add all of your ingredients and blend everything together until you have no large
chunks. You should end up with 'bits' almost like fresh orange juice.

Once blended, pour the mixture into a large container to keep refrigerated and every evening,
pour a shot's worth into a shot glass, throw it back and reap the benefits.

Lately, I've been making this Turmeric Sleep Shot at the beginning of the week and enjoying a shot every
evening an hour before bed. These shots are best enjoyed cold and thrown back - bottoms up!

TIP: With this recipe, I like to focus on its benefits, rather than the taste. Whilst my Primal
Turmeric Sleep Shot boasts a very sweet flavour, it does come with quite a kick of flavours.
